Joni Village is an impoverished village located in the northern part of the Thyolo District, Malawi. This village was introduced to our farming ministry program called Farming God’s Way ten years ago. Farming God’s Way, is an effective, no-till farming method. Our FGW program incorporates discipleship groups called GLGs (God’s Love Groups). These are effective discipleship meetings that bring the people closer to the Lord with Bible teachings & application, teaching them to better work together & help one another & help others. Currently there are 6 God’s Love Groups here, and their success continues to draw more to practice FGW.

CURRENT CONDITIONS

Joni villagers do not have access to clean water, nor do any of the villages in the surrounding area. There is no nearby river so they dig shallow hand-dug wells. These can dry up during dry season and the people may go farther for water. The village people also organized to make a stronger well. They dug a shallow well and fortified it with bricks and cement to protect it, but the water is not clean. They
worked hard to do it, but the people still suffer with dangerous water-related diseases. The people walk at least 2-3 km to fetch this water.

The village in not developed and the government hospital is a far distance away. If someone is sick they must walk starting in the evening to get there the next day. The major diseases here that are causing illness and sometimes death include stomach pains,
cholera, and dysentery.

They shared about one very tragic death. It happened that one day a child was playing at the ‘protected’ shallow well. He fell in and drowned. The people looked for the boy everywhere, but no one thought he would be found in the well. Meanwhile, people continued to use the well water. Days later, the child’s body surfaced to the horror of the people fetching water. The people still use the well
water, but naturally this bothers them.

Cholera is always a major health concern in Malawi and they just experienced one of the worst outbreaks of the disease in 2023.
(Haiti was #1 and Malawi was #2 in the world.) This disease can be avoided and stopped by providing access to safe, clean water!
Providing a well will meet their most urgent need for clean water. Their health will improve immediately. They will have clean water to drink, something they have never had before. Water for cooking, bathing, and other household uses. Moms will be close to home to take care of their families and have peace of mind that the water is clean for their children. They will have water for their livestock and for growing gardens around their homes. They will save money for medicine and save them time and money going to the hospital. Kids can go to school and not be late. Another prime goal is to create more opportunity to share the gospel and to demonstrate the love of Jesus through providing the gift of clean water.

OUR EXPERIENCE IN MALAWI

Our ministry partner, Charles Mithowa, is the main director for these well projects and has completed many. These are very reliable partners and we have had excellent success in our relationship with them to date. Heaven’s Family sister ministry, Farming God’s Way, has been working with Charles for some years now. The farming program is changing lives of poor farmers by helping them raise
more food and teaching discipleship. The government of Malawi has recognized the success of our Farming God’s Way program with these partners.

We do not do projects unless we have formed an ongoing partnership with a good track record of accountability with any ministry partner who is involved in any Safe Water Ministry project. We require ‘before’ marker photos where the well will be drilled. We collect pertinent details that describe the need, collect completion photos, reports and testimonies. The driller will be the same as long as they keep doing good work. They have been very accommodating.

MAINTENANCE AND FUTURE REPAIR

“God’s Love Groups,” discipleship groups [that are] in place for our Farming God’s Way ministry, will direct some of the management, in partnership with the village. The  beneficiaries will contribute a small amount to pay for maintenance. Both the  GLG teams and community authorities shall manage the property for permanent use for the community.

PROJECT COSTS AND TIMELINE

Your generous donation of $3,500 will bring a deep borehole well and a hand pump to this village.  All of your funds will be used for materials and labor.  The project is expected to start in July and be completed in August 2024.

FUTURE IMPACT

Providing a well will meet their most urgent need for clean water. Their health  will improve immediately. They will have clean water to drink, something they have never had before. Water for cooking, bathing, and other household uses. Moms will be close to home to take care of their families and have peace of mind that the water is clean for their children. They will have water for their livestock and for growing gardens around their homes. They will save money for medicine and save the time and money for going to the hospital. Kids can go to school and not be late.

Another prime goal is to create more opportunities to share the gospel and to demonstrate the love of Jesus through providing the gift of clean water.

CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

Farming God’s Way (FGW) coupled with God’s Love Groups (GLGs) is the physical ministry of learning to grow food combined with a wonderful and effective discipleship component. This training has helped the people learn how to grow more food to feed their families, to work together and to follow the Lord more closely. The meetings are held regularly, the Bible is studied, they pray, and families and the whole community are built up. The program also increases dignity and purpose, and provides them with success, which is another benefit for these impoverished people. These poor villages lack access to clean water, and providing clean water not only provides better health, but inspires more interest in FGW/GLGs. The people see the love of Jesus demonstrated through providing clean water.

All projects are made possible by World Changers.
